Street lights have been a major application of the light technology. It is applied in urban and rural streets, highways, bridges, etc. and it consumes a large amount of electricity. Traditional street lights was designed with the low-voltage transmission network, it required long lengths of cables and a complex network to interconnect the lights with each other, it also used a lot of land resources for the laying of the cables, thus, spending a lot of resources and manpower for the construction, operation and maintenance of these street lights.

“Solar-Wind Hybrid System” for the street lights utilizes the alternative and abundant renewable energy sources like the wind energy and solar energy products. Solar cells and wind turbines are used to generate electricity and together with a supplementary battery, to act as a source for the energy-saving lamps. The system has a built in sensor that acts as a controller that switches the lights ON and OFF automatically depending on the brightness, thus, eliminating the need for manpower to manually switch the lights OFF during day time and switch the lights ON during night time.

The Philippines is rich in wind energy and solar energy resources, especially in rural areas. These areas are the ideal sites for the development of the “Solar-Wind Hybrid System”.
